Hula-In for National Key Lime Pie Day, September 26

September 3, 2017

Need an excuse to eat pie, how about National Key Lime Pie Day? Happening on September 26, National Key Lime Pie Day celebrates Key West's most popular dessert. This national food holiday piqued our interest, so we did a little fact-finding of our own and we’ve discovered that our favorite tangy dessert has quite a sweet history. Here is the scoop on Florida’s famous key lime pie.

And then there was pie…

Like frozen orange juice concentrate and sun tan cream, key lime pie was created in The Sunshine State, the Florida Keys, to be exact.

Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally…

Or, give her a round of applause. “Aunt Sally,” relative to ship salvager William Curry, is credited with crafting the first key lime pie, way back in the late 1800s, according to historians. And yes, there are people who actually study this stuff, vigorously.

Fisherman’s devise…

While Aunt Sally is widely credited with the invention of the tangy key lime dessert, another group of individuals are speculated to have created an earlier version of the iconic pie, sponge fishermen. It’s said that Key West sponge fishermen would chow down on a make-do snack made from stale Cuban bread soaked in condensed milk, topped with eggs gathered from nearby islands with a pinch of lime juice added on top. When it was stirred and allowed time to sit, the mixture would gel on the bread, resembling something close to today’s key lime pie, perhaps.

It’s official…

In 2006, key lime pie was dubbed the state of Florida’s “official” pie. But it wasn’t an easy win. The victor barely beat out runner up, pecan pie, for the prestigious title.
